“Having extracted and suspended all measurable qualities, what is left of the thing itself? ‘Imagine someone pointing to a place in the iris of a Rembrandt eye and saying: the walls in my room should be painted this colour’ (Wittgenstein).
Imagine compressing an entire image into a single pixel. And having rendered meaning in the lowest resolution available, you proclaim: only that which is the most simple is real.”
TECHNICAL NOTESLeveraging machine learning algorithms to classify timbrel data in realtime, each instrument used in the piece becomes its own independent trigger of various digital parameters, including the spatial dimension and position of each corresponding sound event. Applied sparingly, the result is a slow process-based development of a highly limited set of materials. Created specifically for the multichannel system in the Multifunktionstudio at Hochschule für Musik und Theater in Hamburg, this piece is diffused through a custom 44.4-channel SPAT configuration, to create a spatial image which can quickly expand and contract between the discrete and the immersive. Four large suspended sheets of raw steel are equipped with contact microphones and low-frequency transducers. In the final section of the work, these steel sheets create a droning ecosystem of feedback and delay which continues autonomously until the piece’s conclusion.
